  • Africa Today - Somalia and terror

Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has told a security conference in Germany that terrorist groups have trained in his country and that the African states need to be organized. President Mohamud admitted his country has been plagued by al-Shabab militants as well as corruption and political infighting and has only made limited progress in setting up a working political system. The presence of Boko Haram—the Takfiri terror group that has pledged allegiance to Daesh—adds a deadly dimension to an already alarming situation in Somalia. President Mohamud added, ‘The terrorists are so linked together, they are associated and so organized, (that) we the world we need to be so organized.’ But is this call for cooperation simply window dressing? A desperate call in need of an urgent response. Close to 20 million people in three African countries and Yemen are at risk of starvation. The UN secretary general says more than $4 billion is needed within the next three weeks or many more will die. Antonio Guterres made an emergency visit to Somalia, where a national disaster has been declared because of drought. About half of the country’s population faces severe food shortages. In South Sudan, famine has been declared in parts of the country. Up to a million people there will soon run out of food. And, the UN says, 400,000 Nigerian children face malnutrition. Close to 80,000 of them might not survive the next few months. What can be done to save the lives of millions in this part of the world? And just who is supposed to act? Pr...

How can a country in such dire straits bear the burden of even more Takfiri activities within its borders? About 10 years ago, in November 2006, Al Jazeera English was launched. To mark that anniversary, we've created REWIND, which updates some of the channel's most memorable and award-winning documentaries of the past decade. We find out what happened to some of the characters in those films and ask how the stories have developed in the years since our cameras left. In 2011, the worst drought in 60 years threw some 13 million people across the Horn of Africa into crisis. In Somalia, ravaged by two decades of conflict, the consequences were disastrous. Hundreds of thousands starved to death, many of them children. In the midst of this human catastrophe Fault Lines travelled to Mogadishu to meet refugees who had fled to the most war-ravaged city in the world to escape an even worse fate, and the aid and medical workers struggling to help them. Fault Lines sought to discover whether aid in this region had become politicised and whether Washington's preoccupation with "terrorism" in the Horn of Africa had contributed to the deadly consequences of this disaster. Nisar Majid, a food security expert and co-author of Famine in Somalia, talks to REWIND about the fallout of the famine and the current situation in Somalia. As aid agencies are warning that five million people in Somalia are again facing acute food shortages due to drought, have lessons been learned? "The situation remains extremely complicated. You still have al-Shabab controlling large parts of southern Somalia and you still have an atmosphere, a difficult operating environment where counterterrorism legislation and the threat of legal action is in place. And where there's a very kind of risk-averse international community who are worried about legal threats, reputational threats by their resources being diverted into the wrong hands ... The situation remains very complicated and the political issues always take precedence in the end and it depends on how those dynamics play out." - Subscribe to our channel: http://aje.io/AJSubscribe - Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/AJEnglish - Find us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/aljazeera - Check our website: http://www.aljazeera.com/

Nairobi (Kenya) is a very complex, diverse city. The rich are REALLY rich, and the poor are REALLY poor. Today I took a trip to a district in Nairobi called Kibera, which is considered to be the biggest urban slum in Africa. More than 1 million people live within 2 square kilometers. I don't know how many videos it will take me to spread this message, but I can tell you with absolute certainty that people in impoverished areas are significantly happier than the wealthy. And overall, I've found Kenyan people to be the most heart warming, welcoming and friendly people in Africa (along with Malawians!) Have I mentioned that I love Nairobi?! Daily life in rural villages in West Africa, specifically in Mossi villages in Burkina Faso. I have included scenes of farming, harvesting, planting, cooking a meal, brewing beer, carving a mask, children playing with dolls and making their own masks, smelting and forging iron, spinning, weaving, a marriage, services in a Christian church and in a Muslim mosque, divination, sacrifices, a fashion show, musical entertainment in the big city, and more.
